PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Alaknanda Market, a successful local market in Delhi, faces issues of unauthorized and unmanaged parking, unsafe walking and cycling environments, disorganized para-transit movement, extreme congestion, and a diluted sense of ‘place’. Therefore, CSE appointed HTAU to prepare a detailed design for on-street parking management for area.
HTAU's ROLE
The aim of HTAU’s proposal was to transform the area through a high quality public realm that is equitable, improves walkability, creates spaces for various activities to unfold and provides well designed, organized and managed parking for all modes. For this, HTAU undertook the review of existing parking policy / norms; analyses and appraisals including parking counts, activity surveys etc.; establishing design and parking pricing principles; and detailed street design and parking management strategy including parking designation.
The proposal mandates all parking on a pay and use basis. To maximize parking turn-over and short-term paid parking has been prioritized to facilitate visitors and shoppers. While parking provision is reduced approximately 40% of the existing stock, through an effective pricing and management strategy and segregation of long-term and short-term parking, the proposal increases the parking turnover substantially (150%), thereby increasing the parking capacity of the precinct.
KEY OUTCOME
The study was also published in the 2015 CSE publication “Move Free, Unlocking the traffic gridlock in our neighbourhoods."
